Things I've learned, While Living in the South

Okay, y'all there's a few things that I have learned since living in the south. For being a northerner, some of them are so different and make me laugh!

Y'all

This word is used for everything. No joke, everything.

Coke

Everything is Coke! Although, yesterday I was informed that Dr. Pepper is excluded from that.

So, example conversation:

"Hey can I get a Coke?"

"Sure what kind of Coke?"

"I'll take a Root Beer"

Buggy

When you go to the grocery store, a northern mom would ask her child to get a cart. A southern mom would ask her child to get a buggy. Yes, you read that right... a buggy! The first time I heard that I was SO CONFUSED. Like, what is a buggy.

Sweet tea

Is the only tea they have. It's severed at all times of day, and you can find it anywhere.

Slang

Fixin to - Also known as "about to....."

Reckin - Can replace "I guess, I suppose, I think and I imagine"

Gators

It's not alligators, it's more like gaders. And they eat them.

Yes ma'am

If you don't say yes ma'am, you're rude.

Interstates

Southerners do not call their interstates "freeways" they call them "highways" cause there's nothing free about it. Side note: tolls are expensive.

Sweet Potato Pie

Yeah, I don't know what this is, or how to make it.

Made is a verb

"I made an A on this test."

When you can't find something

When you can't find a pen, you would say "where do the pens live?"

It's been a learning experience for sure. I have lived in the south for about two years, and I'm still learning new things! I hope y'all enjoyed the laugh!

sincerely, stephanie
